Ivar’s Donates 160,000 Servings of Chowder and Soup to Local Area Food Banks During Crisis


In response to COVID-19 and the increased needs by local and regional food banks to support the community, we recently donated 48 pallets of frozen chowder and soup to Northwest Harvest, The Salvation Army,  Everett Food Bank and The Empowerment Center.

The total amount of chowder and soup donated in March and April was 4,358 cases, providing more than 160,000 servings to families in need.

Due to COVID-19 and Washington State’s shelter in place mandates, schools and community food kitchens have closed. These venues typically provide additional resources for children and low-income families and seniors who need nutritious meals. And with the exponential rise of unemployment, food banks have seen a rapidly growing need from the community – with resources quickly being depleted.

“It was important to us to make a substantial contribution to our area food banks who serve our community – many of whom we partner with and donate to yearly,” said Bob Donegan, President of Ivar’s. “We had an inventory of chowder and soups traditionally reserved for food service sales, but with the current environment, felt we needed to act now to help.”

Even with the recent donations, area food banks have requested more assistance from the community.

How can you help? Consider donating directly to your local food bank. Many have websites and provide details for food drop off, making a monetary donation or volunteering. A number of  food banks are also listed with the annual GiveBIG drive, which has been expanded to two days (May 5-6) -- with early giving happening now.
